Supercomputing hours awarded

DOE has awarded about 1.6 billion supercomputing processor hours to 69 leading-edge projects, for work that'll be done at Argonne in Illinois and Oak Ridge NL in Tennessee. Release here.

ORNL sharpens climate focus

Frank Munger of the KNS reports Oak Ridge National Laboratory is taking steps to concentrate its climate resources into a newly chartered Climate Change Science Institute. ORNL is also now conducting its second annual high-performance computing grant competition, by which scientists and students will be awarded access to ORNL supercomputing resources.

ORNL Climate: Raining money

The KNS reports that Oak Ridge National Laboratory will get $215MM for advanced research from the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration for climate change-related studies, in addition to funding already flowing toward ORNL for that purpose from DOE, NSF and NASA. The combination of supercomputing resources and a high-calibre team of scientists-in-residence gives ORNL momentum.
