New honor for VU alum, Grameen Bank founder
President Barack Obama has named Muhammad Yunus (at left), a 2006 Nobel Prize recipient and Vanderbilt University alumnus (Economics Ph.D., 1971), as one of 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1983, Yunus created the renowned Grameen Bank in his native Bangladesh, to provide small low-interest loans to the poor to help better their livelihood and communities.
